A wild week it has been: hot, so humid, and smoky. In 6 days, we harvested over 800# of tomatoes, and beautiful tomatoes they are this year. Lots of scars on the heirlooms due to intermittent rains and heat as they were growing in size; but delicious and mostly disease and pest free. Other summer fruiting crops are also growing strong. Peppers and eggplants are laden with fruit. Our 3rd succession of zucchini & cucumbers is growing in leaps and bounds alongside the okra; which should be flowering any day now. The watermelons are gaining size and if we get some nice, not too heavy rains this week, it will help push them along. We are close to our large potato harvest, as the plants are now dying back. It is always hard to project crop health in midsummer, as thunderstorms can bring all sorts of damage and we are in the midst of storm season. Yesterday a storm rolled through that knocked a large tree down blocking our drive and bringing down a power line with it. Power was restored within a few hours but we noticed that our small corn stand was ravaged, with about 50% laid down as well. The wind, hail, or heavy rain can always cause unexpected consequences and we just have to be nimble in order to adjust. Check out the recipes below & enjoy the share…..Autumn & Brian

Mashed Zucchini Salad (Ajlouke Qura’a)The New Book of Middle Eastern Food  by Claudia Roden
In this Tunisian salad the blandness of zucchini is lifted by the very rich flavoring.
1 lb zucchini
Juice of ½ a lemon or more
3 Tbls extra-virgin olive oil
1 tsp harissa (or a little chile flake)
1 or 2 cloves garlic, crushed
½ tsp ground coriander
½ tsp caraway seeds
Trim the ends of the zucchini and cut into large pieces. Boil in water for 10-15 minutes, until very soft. Drain then chop and mash in the colander to get rid of excess water. Beat the rest of the ingredients together and mix into the zucchini. Serve Cold.
