Our Fall CSA season is beginning. 10 weeks of a wide diversity of crops, beginning very much still in Summer and ending deep in Fall, with a lot of cool season crops. It has been a ridiculously hot week and feels decidedly still in Summer, some of the crops love it, many hate it. With many of the summer crops, we see intense growth on the fruit during the heat; followed by slow ripening, so a lot right away followed by some stress. Many flowers get burned up or drop, so weeks later the same crop will have a slump in harvest. This has happened a few times this summer, where we have had at least 4 intense heat waves. The fall crops are establishing well; but they stagnate completely with such intense heat and humidity. We are happy that most have established well, being so much warmer than most late august/ early Septembers since we have been farming here. We have been holding a lot of seeding over the past week, hoping for a cooler window in the low 80’s to get our winter carrots, radishes, beets, and turnips seeded. These are important seedings and we need good temperatures to get going well. Lots going on in September and we are glad you are here to enjoy the bounty of the fall.
This week’s share finally has okra, as we transitioned from our spring/summer to fall share the plants decided to begin fruiting and now they are on fire. Tomatoes and cucumbers are in abundance and really delicious, the late cucumbers are so much better than early season this year, which is quite rare for us. While many a fall crop is in the ground, they are coming on a bit late; but cut greens are back in force and will be delicious with all the summer crops.
